When I finish the install of my two new replacements, I'll have to post a pic of my truck that I use for work and railfanning. The MTS is just the flashport version of the radio and offers encyption. However you are paying top dollar for this line of radio, and not gaining any real advantage for the price, except for a higher repair bill should a problem arise. The MT2000 is a nice radio, I have two in service here. Also, the JT1000 defeats the purpose of quickly going to another channel than having to type in 12 digits for changing to a none-stored freqency. There is a way around that, but its beyond the capabilites of most people and radio shops won't touch it.

I personally haven't seen a portable used without one.
#CLEVELAND ASTRO SABER MOD#
The JT1000 mod does work, however it disables the use of a speakermic, which is widely used on the railroad. The DTMF front was not widely ordered, but they are out there. Most disp consoles are also equiped to respond to a "911" DTMF sequence for emergencies. Also, seeing that this radio is being used in actually railroad work, the DTMF pad is basically a requirement to calling dispatchers, etc. Some local shops *may* still be able fix them, but you can't count on it. Once replacement parts are gone, that's it. The lowband version is still supported though. The MT1000 has been offically discontiued for service by Motorola. Looks the same, works the same, but supports digital operation if the IMBE software has been loaded. The railroad spectra has since been replaced by the Astro Railroad Spectra. You can program in "preset" simplex or repeater pair in after AAR channel 97. The railroad spectra is also a 128 channel radio. The railroad spectra is the same radio as the 45watt VHF spectra, but has slightly different firmware for RR operations. The radio chasis are the same (for the most part) but the MLM boards are different. The A5/A7 are the only heads that are identical internally. MT1000 (99 channel verion out there, but a very discontinued radio) I think I still have a local hook around here where I may be able to do it for you for free. The programming hardware and software will cost you about $500 if you wanted to buy that. Since you may need all 97 AAR channels in there, it might cost you a bit. There is no set cost for programmming, so shop around. You will need to take the radio the a local Motorola radio shop to get them programmed whice can run you $25 and up. These radios ARE NOT USER FIELD PROGRAMMABLE. I could be way off as I haven't had to order one in awhile. Used on ebay runs $400-$600 depending on the accessories that come with it.

For your job you should get the full keypad model so that you have full DTMF access. The HT1250 comes in two flavors.the display and limited keypad and the display and full keypad. I think there is a continous know option now so that if u are on ch16, and need to go to ch1, you don't have to turn the knob all the way around. You can break that up into mulitple zones (or banks). It has a front display and will allow upto 128 channels. Way overkill, and not worth the cash used (around $1000 and up).Īs much as I don't like them for public safety use, this should work well for you.the HT1250. You don't need the high tier radio such as the Saber, Astro Saber, XTS/XTL line. Most are pretty tough and strong, and will take the abuse. I am sure that you want a portable, and not a mobile, so we will start there. Ok, this is where I have fun.considering that I am the radio system manager for my town (police/fire/EMS).
